Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral Basilica is the first Catholic Church in Guam. The church was constructed in 1669-1670 by Chamorro under the direction of Padre Diego Luis de San Vitores on lands granted by Chief Quipuha, the ranking male of Hagatna at that time. Its structure survived until World War II when it was destroyed during the shelling of Hagatna in preparation for the American invasion.
It has been replaced and built as a proud memorial for the original structure that was demolished during World War II. The predecessor of the present-day Basilica was a chapel, also named Capilla, constructed of rough logs and a nipa thatch built within the perimeter of the Plaza.
The cathedral's construction in the middle of the capital city of Guam began in 1955 and was finished by 1958. It was the prime structure around which the administrative buildings were built.
Your Cathedral-Basilica is open to you. The Dulce Nombre de Maria Parish was founded by Blessed Diego Luis de San Vitores on 1669. The physical structure of the Cathedral-Basilica has been changed several times throughout the years, but the faith of the people who visit for prayer is the same. The faithful from Guam and Marianas Islands are able to visit the Mother Church of Archdiocese Agana. Although the parish is older than most modern societies, it still has a youthful and vibrant spirit.
You can find updates on the parish and mass times as well as sacramental forms online. Register
